Polo-sized offering from Volkswagen is set to shake up the EV market
With Volkswagen on an EV torrent at the moment, having just teased the also Polo-sized, £17,000 ID.1 EV, it seems fitting that the much anticipated Polo replacement is revealed. Called the ID.2all, this new fully electric vehicle from the German brand is set to really shake up the EV market.
This car will be significant. The Polo, in all of its variants, is hugely popular in the UK; and with car manufacturers being forced to cull their pure fossil-fueled vehicles by 2035, it’s no surprise VW is wanting a slice of the pie. Following on from their Dieselgate scandal, VAG (Volkswagen Auto Group) are looking to clean up their act.

With the new concept images released by Volkswagen, we have some idea of what it will look like. Surprisingly, you would expect ‘all’ to mean all-wheel drive. But no, this car is front drive exclusively. Utilising the MEB architecture (of which the ID.1 will sit on), it will set to keep costs down amid VW’s aggressive EV implementation.
We know that Škoda, Seat and Cupra will also use the platform so we’ll wait to hear from them. Regarding the styling, it very much follows the design language of the current ID range of cars with a much nicer interior.
What does this mean for VW?
It means a lot, a hell of a lot. VW is one of the biggest manufacturers in the world and with the ID.3 hoping to replace the Golf, they also need to replace the Polo. Seemingly confusing, based on that the ID.1 is expected to also be Polo-sized, the ID.2all will be slightly larger and slightly more expensive.

Electric cars and motorbikes are still expensive, but with the new EV set to retail at around £22,000, it may be just the ticket. We already have the ID.3, ID.4 and now ID.5 – but they’re all quite pricey. To get real market share, they need something more entry-level. Tesla are also having a crack at this.
With the cheapest EV offering from VW sitting at £37,000, this new ID.2all is a huge reduction. This may be pivotal for the brand and will allow them to compete in an newly emerging market.
Battery and powertrain options
No battery size has been mentioned yet, but it is likely to use the 166kW motor attached to the front wheels. That sets out to be around 223bhp, resulting in a 0-60 time of less than 7 seconds. Not too shabby.

Keeping the ‘skateboard’ platform that many car makers use, this allows the mass of the batteries and motors to be sat low in the car, helping to keep the centre of gravity closer to the ground. Obvious benefits are the increased handling ability and lack of waywardness found in conventional SUVs.
Size-wise, it is likely to mirror the current Polo. Sitting at 4050mm long and 1812mm wide. It’ll sit on 20″ alloys with low-profile tyres to aid in the handling and overall dynamics.
Speaking about the new car, Volkswagen CEO Thomas Schäfer said: “The ID.2all shows where we want to take the brand. We want to be close to the customer and offer top technology in combination with fantastic design. We are implementing the transformation at pace to bring electric mobility to the masses.”

Visually, it doesn’t look half bad, and with VW setting to release 10 new EV’s in the next 3 years, it should be an interesting car.
Debuting in 2025, it could be one to look out for.
