In a potential u-turn decision, the Mercedes C63 and E63 AMG pair may be graced once again with a V8 thankfully
Reports suggest that the upcoming Mercedes C63 and E63 AMG models are poised to make a return to utilising V8 engines. According to credible information from two separate sources conveyed to Car and Driver, these vehicles are expected to incorporate a modified variant of the M177 twin-turbo 4.0 litre V8 engine by 2026.
Reliable insiders among the project’s senior engineers have conveyed to the aforementioned publication that minimal adjustments would be necessary for the V8 to seamlessly integrate into the C Class and E Class models. This proposed engine iteration is projected to align with the stringent EU7 emissions regulations. There are indications that hybrid technology might also contribute to its performance, as hinted by these sources.

Mercedes has already introduced hybrid editions of the twin-turbo V8 engine. A prime example is the Mercedes AMG GT63 S E Performance, which integrates the force-fed 4.0 litre V8 with electric augmentation. This particular setup generates an impressive 831 bhp and 1,400 Nm of torque, accompanied by a 6.1-kilowatt-hour battery. Additionally, the S63 offers a version that churns out 791 bhp and a remarkable 1,430 of torque.
As for the potential power output of the V8-driven C63 and E63 models, the exact figures remain undisclosed at this time. However, insights can be gleaned from the existing GT63 and S63 models, providing a glimpse into what can be anticipated in terms of engine performance.

In the current iteration, the C63 employs a plug-in hybrid-boosted turbocharged 2.0 litre four banger, not quite hitting the mark with AMG fans. The cumulative output does reach an impressive 671 bhp and 1,019 Nm of torque, abetted by a 6.1 kWh battery capacity. This configuration allows the Merc to reach the national speed limit in just 3.3 seconds. Furthermore, with the optional AMG Driver’s Package, the top speed can reach 180 mph.
The upcoming E63 has yet to make its official debut. Based on the available information, indications point toward the utilisation of a turbocharged 3.0 litre inline six engine, complemented by plug-in hybrid support. While the precise power output remains undisclosed, reports speculate it to hover around 700 bhp and 1,193 Nm of torque. It’s anticipated that this performance-oriented saloon/wagon might make its first appearance before the conclusion of 2023.

Mercedes is simultaneously in the process of preparing for the imminent unveiling of the new AMG GT coupe. According to reports, this model is expected to share the same twin-turbo 4.0 litre V8 engine found in the SL63, generating 577 bhp and 800 Nm. Lower-tier trim levels may incorporate a turbocharged 2.0 litre four-cylinder, capable of delivering 375 bhp and 480 Nm. Again, would be an interesting choice for Merc to make considering the reception of a “should be V8-only” car not having the V8.
Yeigh!
