Toyota is continuing its onslaught of hydrogen fuelled vehicles by focusing on the commercial truck sector
Toyota and VDL Groep have unveiled their inaugural hydrogen fuel cell demonstration truck, marking a significant milestone in their collaborative effort initiated in May last year. Toyota’s strategic objective is to reduce the carbon footprint of its European logistics operations by integrating its advanced fuel cell technology into VDL’s heavy-duty truck lineup.
The maiden demonstration truck will undergo rigorous road testing to pinpoint areas for enhancement in preparation for the next phase of the program. VDL Groep is gearing up to introduce an additional four fuel cell trucks, which will be operated by Toyota’s logistics partners: VOS Transport Group, CEVA, Groupe CAT, and Yusen. These logistics providers will actively participate in the project by deploying the hydrogen-powered trucks on their regular routes across Belgium, France, and the Netherlands. Notably, each of these routes boasts at least one hydrogen refuelling station (HRS), equipped with contingency measures as needed.
This collective endeavour is poised to consolidate insights into the practical deployment of fuel cell trucks on public roadways, thereby contributing to Europe’s ongoing ecological energy transition. The five-year trial is anticipated to drive the further development of a sustainable hydrogen infrastructure across Europe, aligning with AFIR (Alternative Fuels Infrastructure Regulation) requirements and facilitating the emergence of additional carbon-neutral hydrogen mobility solutions.
This initiative aligns seamlessly with Toyota’s overarching mission to decarbonise its logistics operations and aligns with the company’s ambitious target to achieve carbon neutrality by 2040. Beyond the electrification of passenger vehicles, Toyota is actively collaborating with diverse partners spanning the mobility spectrum, leveraging their collective expertise to test and deliver dependable and efficient solutions that accelerate the transition to a sustainable and readily accessible zero-emission hydrogen economy.
Toyota’s commitment to hydrogen as a pivotal component of their sustainable mobility vision is further underscored by their significant investments and groundbreaking developments. In addition to their pioneering efforts in fuel cell truck technology, Toyota recently revealed plans to produce a hydrogen-fueled version of their iconic Hilux pickup truck in the United Kingdom. This strategic move not only demonstrates their dedication to expanding the application of hydrogen across diverse vehicle segments but also reinforces their position as a driving force behind the advancement of hydrogen-powered solutions in the automotive industry.
