Will the newly released Lexus LBX gain a performance version using the technology from the incredible Toyota Yaris GR?
Toyota and its Gazoo Racing arm have championed the art of the hot hatch, transforming the unassuming Yaris into a bespoke rally homologation special. This venture was then reimagined, with its technology filtering down into the GR Corolla, embracing the niche over in the states.
It was only a matter of time before Toyota directed its focus toward the burgeoning market of souped-up crossovers. A fresh report emerging from Japan suggests that the first contender in this arena will be the Lexus LBX.
According to Mag-X, citing unnamed sources, the LBX will harness the power of the 1.6-litre turbocharged three-cylinder, tuned to emulate the dynamism seen in the GR Yaris. This translates to a formidable 257bhp and 266lb ft of torque in European specifications. What’s more, it is speculated to offer the six-speed manual gearbox as standard. Additionally, an eight-speed torque converter, potentially incorporating the innovative Direct Automatic Transmission technology tested in Super Taikyu racing, could be available as an option. Both transmission systems will channel power through Toyota’s GR-Four system, specially developed for the Yaris.
While the potential usage of GR branding on the LBX remains ambiguous, as Lexus traditionally reserves its performance cars for the F moniker, Mag-X hints at the possibility of GR badging appearing on select parts of the vehicle.
Anticipated styling of the LBX might mirror the essence of other GR-branded vehicles if Gazoo Racing opts to inscribe its name on the LBX. The report hints at broader tyres necessitating extended wheel arches, but rather than incorporating new panels, these are likely to be stick-on additions.
The arrival of the GR-tuned Lexus LBX might not be far off. A statement made to Japanese media from the company hinted at a new LBX making an appearance at the Tokyo Auto Salon in January. They further revealed plans to “exhibit a performance model with a strengthened powertrain,” indicating exciting prospects in the performance crossover realm.
What is clear though is that Lexus really do not utilise the F brand enough, and take that from someone who used to own the incredibly wonderful IS F.
