The new Volkswagen ID.7 is the brands flagship all-electric model that has a claimed range of 435 miles that launches later this year.

Yes, the long-awaited ID.7 is finally upon us, as Wolfsburg have revealed the production version of the rather anticipated flagship model. The new Volkswagen is set to take on the luxury market thanks to some rather helpful features, such as massaging seats, a greater focus on comfort and some decent tech.

Whilst previously camouflaged in all media, we can now see the 7 for what it really is. Which thankfully, is a very handsome car. The super slippery sloping roofline adds to the overall appeal of the design, and also helps it to produce a drag-coefficient of just 0.23. That’s more slippery than a swordfish (trust me, I looked it up)!

The design language is quintessentially new-age Volkswagen, with the full length light bar on both the front and rear, similar to that found on the MK8 Golf and ID family of vehicles. The minimalist design is akin to current Tesla’s, with more of a focus on visual appeal.

Regarding the interior, it is pretty much what we expected to see as it wasn’t really covered up in the test mules. We do know that the 7 will have optional massaging seats, a panoramic sunroof with switchable smart glass, a 15 inch touchscreen and a heads up display with augmented reality. Very promising stuff so far then.

Powertrain wise, the new Volkswagen ID.7 will be powered by a 286bhp motor driving the rear wheels for the first batch of cars produced. It is likely that a dual motor version will happen, and potentially a GTX variant as well. However, we should expect to see a 0-60 time of around 5 and a bit seconds.

Any cool features?

Yes, aside from the aforementioned massaging seats, they’ll also be cooled, heated and be able to dry themselves apparently. There’s the sunroof that was mentioned which can be controlled through voice commands. They’ll be a Harmon/Kardon sound system (take note, Tesla) and decent self-driving capabilities.

When will we get it?

Good question, and I can answer that. VW have said that the new ID.7 will be released to Europe and China later this year. Those across the pond in America will have to wait until 2024 to get their hands on one.

Imelda Labbé, Member of the Brand Board of Management for Sales, Marketing and Aftersales (catchy title), had this to say: “The ID.7 is an extremely important model for the Volkswagen brand in Europe, China and North America. The ID.7 offers an attractive package that will excite both existing and new Volkswagen customers all over the world. In this Volkswagen, we are offering premium technologies that impress through their exclusivity, premium comfort and high degree of everyday usability.”

Speaking about the VW electric offensive, Thomas Schäfer, CEO of Volkswagen said: “With the ID.7 we are taking the next step in our electric offensive. The limousine offers a high level of comfort and long ranges. Already by 2026, we will offer the widest electric range of all manufacturers in Europe – from the entry-level model for less than 25,000 euros up to the ID.7 as the new top model within the ID. family. Our goal is to achieve an electric car share of 80 per cent in Europe by 2030. As from 2033, Volkswagen will produce only electric vehicles in Europe.”

So, it should be an extremely important car for VW, we can’t wait to get behind the wheel of this!
