The 2023 Volkswagen Amarok is here! Whilst it hasn’t launched for the public yet, we were fortunate enough to have a drive in it and see what it’s like on the road.

2023 Volkswagen Amarok Review

Featuring a 3.0 V6 turbo diesel, this mighty lump puts out 240bhp and 600Nm of torque that provides effortless levels of performance – in a massive truck! This new one shares the same platform as the 2023 Ford Ranger but offers a more lifestyle focused approach, as it evident by the extremely high build quality and nice little touches throughout the cabin. What’s most surprising about this Amarok, is just how much fun this thing can be! On a tight twisty road, we were grinning from ear to ear.

We took the Amarok around the twisting corners of Millbrook’s hill course to see what the on-road handling dynamics were like. We know it will be good off road but that will only account for 1% of the vehicles use in this lifestyle-focused truck.

Whilst it does roll a bit, it corners surprisingly well and the gearbox was always in the right gear – even without a sport mode present on this. The seats are incredibly supportive and supremely comfortable. In fact, the whole interior on this thing is lovely, it is a huge step up from the not-too-bad previous generation Amarok.

The large portrait-style screen is immensely informative and looks brilliant, almost as good as the exterior of the truck. Visibility is also excellent, allowing me to see up the challenging hills of the short course and all of the immediate braking points.

It was so much fun trying to turn this into a hot hatch that I think an Amarok race series should exist.
