The South Korean automaker has now announced their name change, after being acquired by the KG Group – they’re now named KGM

We knew it was coming, SsangYong has unfortunately been in financial difficulty for the last couple of years but there is hope, namely that they have been bought out by KG Group. This does mean that another name change is on the way, as they were previously bought by SsangYong Group in 1988.

It is a relief, as SsangYong actually make some very good cars, we have recently reviewed the 2023 Musso and look forward to checking out the facelift of that truck, as well as the new Rexton. KG Group bought the automaker last year, and were toying with idea of renaming the company KG Mobility. Thankfully, they have decided against this and gone with the much more simpler ‘KGM’.

We do know that the ‘Dragon Wing’ logo will stay and continue to be used by the company, so a total rebrand is not happening. We also know that current models such as the Musso, Rexton and Turismo will still be called SsangYong. There is no official word yet on whether or not the facelifted Tivoli will be branded as a KGM. Current owners should have nothing to fear though, as it is highly likely all dealerships will change over.

The Rexton will eventually adopt the name change

It could also prove to be a good move for the Korean manufacturer as a SsangYong name change may not be so bad. In my experience, people find the name difficult to remember, spell and even say – so ‘KGM’ should make it easier. The major problem is that SsangYong is relatively unknown as it is, and a name change will require significant marketing investment.

Still, the company make very good cars/trucks, ownership satisfaction is high and they are exceptionally good value for money. We are a fan of them here at Auto House.
